How to Cut Flowers with Farmer Caroline

First, if you are looking to cut flowers for a special event, or have us cut them for you, click here.

Whether you are cutting flower at the farm, garden, or in your own backyard, there are some tips you should know about when and how to cut them. If you do it right, cutting your flowers will actually be good for the plant and encourage flower production. Do it wrong, and you can reduce the number of flowers produced.

  1. Aim for flowers that have just opened or are beginning to open. They will last longer.

  2. Try for the longest stem BUT don’t cut off buds/side shoots of future plants (see the video for what this looks like).

  3. Remove the leaves after you have cut the flower either by sliding your hands down the stem or cutting with your snips. Leave them on and they rot in the water and get smelly.

  4. Go where the colors and your favorite blooms take you. Have fun!

  5. Once you are done arranging your bouquet, snip at the shortest stem and then put it in water. Snip the bottom of the flowers once more just before they go into water. They shouldn’t be out of water for more than 30 seconds after the last snip.

  6. For long lasting flowers, change the water every day or two.

  7. It is best to cut the flowers in the morning or evening, not in the heat of the day. Also, not after a rain.
